My passion for writing was ignited in high school when I started an underground newspaper with a group of friends. The ACLU honored us with their Courageous Advocate Award for continuing to publish the paper despite the administration's threats to expel us. Many, many years later, I am a poet, a homeschooling mama of two, and co-founder of Canary Acres Animal Sanctuary. I believe that words, spoken or written, can be magic spells that alter someone's existence, for just a minute or for much longer. I believe poetry is powerful...poetry is witchcraft.
I also believe that spilling your guts can be transformative, that writing can heal. I believe in what I call Renegade Poetry, which is exactly what it sounds like: writing that breaks the rules, bucks the norms, and tells wild and dirty truths. I believe the world has enough poems praising the branches swaying in the wind, the stillness of winter, the breath-taking sunrise. What the world needs is your secrets. Your ghosts. So, how about it? You show me your scars, and I'll show you mine.
